BEREFT Massive Attack collaborator, Tricky has revealed how he is “losing his mind” as he struggles to cope with suddenly losing his 24-year-old-daughter, Mina Mazy Topley-Bird.
The heartbroken dad said music “doesn’t sound the same” and everything “looks different” since the passing of his daughter on May 8.
In a candid interview, the star – real name Adrian Nicholas Matthews Thaws – opened up about his grief while discussing his upcoming biography, Hell is Round the Corner which focuses on his tough upbringing.
Speaking to The Guardian, he said he had never loved anyone as much as he had loved Mazy, who tragically died in May this year – with an ongoing NHS Trust inquiry into her death.
Everything looks different, even music doesn’t sound the same
He said when Mazy, sometimes known as Mina was born in 1995 it catapulted him out of his “emotionally numb” existence.
The heartbroken trip-hop star says he feels like he’s lost his “belief” following the death of his child.
He said that watching Mazy’s birth changed him, adding “suddenly I was feeling things.”
The star said he’s never felt grief like it before: “I’ve lost people before, like grandmothers, but I’ve bounced back.
“This is different. Everything looks different, even music doesn’t sound the same,” he added.
Tricky continued: “I feel like I’m losing my mind. I was in Islington yesterday and I was hoping I was going to see her, hoping she’s gonna walk up to me.
The Bristolian rapper is currently in therapy, which is helping him cope – but each day is tough.
He added that one of his neighbours looks a lot like his daughter, Mazy which makes it even harder.
Tricky, along with ex-partner and Mazy’s mother, Martina Topley-Bird shared the tragic news of their daughter’s death via Facebook on May 29.
In a Facebook post, 51-year-old rapper Tricky spoke movingly about his pain at the untimely loss of his daughter.
He wrote: “I thought I knew what loss was, but now my daughter is gone I realise I had no idea what it was after all.
‘YOUR WORDS AND SONGS LIVE ON’
“It feels like I’m in a world that doesn’t exist, knowing nothing will ever be the same again.
“No words or text can really explain — my soul feels empty.
“Mazy Mina, my daughter, had two names — some people called her Mazy, some people called her Mina.
“She had an amazing talent for singing and songwriting; songs which will be finished and heard.
“Your words and songs live on, I will make sure they do.
“I haven’ had the strength to even look at a picture of you until now — people will hear your voice and songs.
“All my heart — what’s left of it.
“Love you Mazy Mina, Dad.”
The post also included a quote from Mazy Mina’s mum, singer Martina Topley-Bird.
She said: “Sweet baby, life won’t be the same without you.”
Devastated dad Tricky also included a link to Mazy Mina’s 2013 song, When You Go.
The track opens with the words: “Take me with you when you go.
“I’ll wait with a smile ’til you come home.”
The musician is planning to bring to life some of the songs Mazy was working on before she died by including two tracks on his next album.
Bristolian music producer Tricky collaborated with Massive Attack in the late 80s and early 90s, including on their extremely influential debut album Blue Lines in 1991.
During that period, he met Martina Topley-Bird while she was sitting on a wall singing to herself near his home.
They put out a song together, Aftermath, and she went on to be the main vocalist on his first solo album, Maxinquaye, released in 1995.
Their daughter, Mina Mazy, was born on March 19 in the same year.
There is an ongoing enquiry into the 24-year-old’s sudden death[/caption]
Tricky was invited as a guest vocalist for Beyonce’s headline set at Glastonbury in 2011[/caption]
