GREATER Manchester Police have confirmed that five people have been stabbed at the Manchester Arndale shopping centre.
Here’s the latest on what happened and where exactly it occurred.
What happened at the Arndale shopping centre?
Five people were injured in a stabbing at a shopping centre in Manchester on October 11.
Dramatic footage from the scene shows police Tasering an assailant outside the packed shopping centre in Manchester City centre.
According to the Manchester Evening News, two women were knifed in the hand and a man suffered stab wounds to the back and stomach.
An MEN reporter said he was told that two people were “randomly stabbing” shoppers.
It has now been revealed by police that the attacker acted alone.
The 40-year-old man who was arrested at the scene for committing a terrorism offence has now been assessed by specialist doctors and has been detained under the Mental Health Act, say cops.
The shopping centre was evacuated, with David Allinson, Centre Director, Manchester Arndale, saying: “A serious incident has taken place at Manchester Arndale this morning.
“The centre has been evacuated while police investigate the incident.
“We are unable to comment any further as the incident is currently being handled by Greater Manchester Police, who we will continue to support with their investigation.”
What have police said?
Greater Manchester Police issued a statement saying: “Specialist officers are continuing to respond to an incident at the Arndale shopping centre in Manchester city centre.
“We can confirm that five people have been stabbed and taken to hospital.
“In these early stages we are keeping an open mind about the motivation of this terrible incident and the circumstances as we know them.
“Given the location of the incident and its nature, officers from Counter Terrorism Police North West are leading the investigation as we determine the circumstances.”
In a later statement the police said there is an investigation underway to determine the motives behind the attack.
Where is the Arndale shopping centre?
The shopping centre is located in Market Street in Manchester city centre.
It is the largest of a group of Arndale centres around the UK and Europe’s biggest city centre shopping centre.
After the 1996 IRA bombing it underwent extensive redevelopment.
What happened on October 4?
Cops were called to Arndale shopping centre on the afternoon of October 4, where large groups had gathered outside.
Greater Manchester Police said they dealt with “a large group of youths causing anti-social behaviour towards security staff” on the second floor.
They evacuated the centre and cleared the food court, where the group had gathered.
Witnesses reported mass disruption, with one saying he saw a “riot van, four police cars and an ambulance” outside the Arndale.
Another told the Manchester Evening News they saw pepper spray being used by police, but this has not been confirmed by GMP.
Police arrested two 16-year-old boys on suspicion of public order offences.
