THE third People’s Vote march will storm London next Saturday – with protesters fighting for a second referendum.
Politicians and campaigners, including Dame Margaret Beckett and Lord Heseltine, attended the last event. But what is the People’s Vote campaign?
What is the People’s Vote?
The group is campaigning for a “final say on the Brexit deal”, saying it’s “the only way forward” as “whichever way you voted two years ago, nobody voted for a deal that makes you poorer and offers less control”.
The grassroots campaign was launched at the Electric Ballroom in Camden, London, on April 15, 2018, and is supported by Open Britain, the European Movement UK and Britain for Europe, among others.
There are more than 700,000 campaign supporters, 20,000 activists and over a million followers on social media, with “more joining every day”, the group says.
More than 700,000 Remainers took part in a People’s Voice march demanding a second vote on staying in the European Union in the capital last October.
What are their rallies about?
The People’s Vote says that celebrities, political leaders and “hundreds of friendly faces” will gather tonight in Derby where they will listen to former Tory deputy prime minister Michael Heseltine, and former deputy Labour leader Margaret Beckett.
She will say: “Michael and I have had our differences over the years but we are together on this same platform because we know the stakes are so huge.”
The free one-hour-long rally starts at 7pm at the Grand River Suite, Northcliffe House.
The People’s Vote website says: “It’s now clear that this is a crisis that cannot be settled by our prime minister or his government. It can only be settled by us, the people.
“His Brexit crisis has now come down to a simple question about whether we live in a democracy: can we allow Boris Johnson to force No Deal — or another vicious form of Brexit — on our country, without all of us having our voice heard?”
Dame Margaret Beckett, MP for Derby South, said that “as the UK stumbles towards the new Brexit deadline of October 31… we are approaching a new cliff-edge of accidentally crashing out of the EU with no deal.
“Instead of trying to force Brexit through Parliament and on the country, we believe… a people’s voice is the only way out of this crisis.”
