The UK is set to brace for seven days of heavy rain, as this weather map for Wednesday afternoon shows[/caption]

As many as 13 flood alerts and two flood warnings have been issued across the country for Wednesday – mainly affecting the Midlands and the North East.

Met Office weather maps also show scrawly and intense showers sweeping in from the west.

These severe bouts of rainfall will mainly affect Scotland, Northern Ireland and the far south and west of England.

Thankfully, the showers will be interspersed with spells of sunshine today – providing some respite for drenched Brits.

40MPH GALES

But severe gales topping 40mph will also be a big factor in the weather today – especially across the Highlands and western parts.

The Met Office said of Wednesday’s conditions: “A mixture of sunny spells and showers.

“Showers heaviest and most frequent in the west with a risk of thunder, whilst some eastern areas remain dry. Windy.”

It added for tonight: “Further showers are likely near western coasts but many inland and eastern areas becoming dry with clear spells.

“Remaining windy.”

Thursday will see yet more showers and strong gales in store for many.

Those in the east of the country could see some break from the bad weather first thing tomorrow as showers briefly let up.
