POLICE are urgently trying to trace a man whose finger was randomly dropped through the letterbox of an unsuspecting family.
A twisted ghoul delivered the top part of the severed finger to the house in Bognor Regis, West Sussex.
It is said to have been chopped off within five days of it being posted in the “unusual and isolated incident.”
DNA established that it came from a male — but nothing else is known about him or whether he is dead or alive.
Checks with the DNA National Database and missing persons’ files have failed to establish his identity.
The finger part was dropped through the door on September 10. They are said to have “reeled in horror” after realising what the grisly object was.
Sussex Police confirmed to The Sun they are “investigating an incident where a fingertip was posted through a letterbox in Bognor Regis on Tuesday, September 10.”
A spokeswoman added: “Inquiries have been generated including checking of CCTV in the area, and inquiries with hospitals.
“At this time the casualty remains unidentified, but the investigation continues.”
‘REELED IN HORROR’
There is no suggestion that the householders who received the finger part through the post were being targeted in any way.
Chichester and Arun District Commander, Chief Inspector Jon Carter, said: “This is an unusual and isolated incident.
“While we accept it may be alarming, I would like to reassure people there have been no reports of similar incidents in the area.”
He added that “there is no evidence to suggest that this is part of criminal activity, or that any person has been targeted”.
The bizarre finger discovery echoes the cult mystery film Blue Velvet, in which a college student finds a severed ear that leads to him uncovering a huge criminal conspiracy and starting a love affair with a singer.
A source said: “Nobody is suggesting the planting of this finger is any kind of way a Blue Velvet in Bognor.
“The police are concerned that serious harm has come to the person whose finger was posted through the letterbox.

“It was a terrible thing for that family to find on the inside of their front door. They reeled in horror after finding out what the object was.
“The householders do not appear to have any enemies. It is a total mystery.
“Police are unsure whether this was a prank by someone with access to bodies, such as a mortuary worker or undertaker, or something more sinister.”
