Who is Charlotte Edwardes?

Charlotte Edwardes is a journalist at the Sunday Times.

Writing in her debut column for the newspaper’s Style magazine, Edwardes says that Boris Johnson squeezed her thigh and that of another woman under the table at a dinner held at the offices of the Spectator magazine.

She says that Johnson, then editor of the Spectator, put his hand “high” up her leg and had “enough inner flesh beneath his fingers” to make her “sit suddenly upright”.

Edwardes was at the time a young newspaper reporter and occasional contributor to the magazine.

She says that after the dinner, she confided in the woman who had been sat on Johnson’s opposite side, who she knew, and who replied: “Oh God, he did exactly the same to me.”

Was Boris Johnson married at the time?

Johnson was at the time aged around 35 and married to his second wife, lawyer and author Marina Wheeler.

Edwards also alleges that throughout the dinner Johnson repeatedly referred to Wheeler as his “current wife”.

Johnson later became a Conservative MP and shadow arts minister, but was dismissed in late 2004 but then-opposition leader Michael Howard when allegations he had had an affair with Spectator columnist Petronella Wyatt, which Johnson had publicly denied, were proved to be true.

Johnson and Wheeler separated in 2018 and are currently going through divorce proceedings.

What is Edwardes’ link to Robert Peston?

Edwardes is herself currently in a relationship with ITV News political editor and former BBC News economics editor Robert Peston.

Edwardes was writing to mark the second anniversary of the start of the #MeToo movement, which began in October 2017 after allegations by dozens of women alleging sexual misconduct by movie mogul Harvey Weinstein emerged.

The movement saw women around the world sharing stories of sexual harassment and abuse they had suffered on social media using the hashtag #MeToo.
