A DESPERATE search was underway today after a person was thought to have been swept away by a river during flooding.
Emergency services were called to Gloucester Docks at 11.25am today following reports that someone was in difficulty.
Cops rushed to the scene after a concerned member of the public saw an “object, animal or person” in that part of the River Severn.
However, just after 2pm it was announced that the search is being stood down.
A police spokesman said: “Police received a call from a concerned member of the public to say a person was walking next to the River Severn when the bore came and they were concerned the person had been swept away.
“A search involving officers, Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service, the National Police Air Service and the Severn Area Rescue Association is currently underway in the Castlemeads area.
“A road closure is currently in place at Westgate Island to help with traffic management whilst searches are conducted. No further information is available at this time.”
