She was rushed to the Royal Victoria Infirmary with serious injuries where she remains in a life-threatening condition.

The vehicle stopped nearby shortly after the collision, but the driver ran from the scene on foot.

The car has now been seized as Northumbria Police have launched a manhunt to find the driver.

Enquirers are ongoing

Officers are urging for the driver to come forward and identify himself.

Two women – aged 31 and 28 – have been arrested by police on suspicion of perverting the course of justice as part of the investigation.

Both remain in police custody at this time.

‘LIKE AN EXPLOSION’

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision, or knows the identity of the driver or their whereabouts to come forward.

Furthermore, anyone with dashcam footage that may have filmed the vehicle in the moments before the collision is also asked to contact officers.

One resident described the scene as “total chaos”.

They told ChronicleLive:” My son’s friend was riding his bike and he heard a bang, like an explosion.

“He came in here to tell us ‘I think someone has been hit’.

“We went out to look and I saw someone frantically doing CPR.

“It was total chaos, there were ambulances coming from both directions.”

A spokesman for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called shortly before 7pm to a road traffic collision involving a pedestrian and a car.

“We sent two double-crewed ambulances and a clinical care manager.
