A BRITISH man has been found dead after going on a mountain hike in Costa Blanca.
The 56-year-old’s body was discovered by a search team after his wife reported him missing yesterday afternoon.
He reportedly called his wife and told her he felt unwell – then made a second call saying he felt better, but he failed to return.
His body was later discovered near a path between a shooting range and the Montgo Mountain around 7 pm following a brief land and air search involving police and firefighters.
A helicopter used by firefighters, called the Alfa 1, spotted the body.
A spokesman for the rescue team said: “The hiker who had disappeared in the Montgo Natural Park has been located. Unfortunately he had died.”
The Montgo Natural Park, between Javea and Denia, is regarded as one of the most beautiful enclaves of the province of Alicante.
Its star attraction is the Montgo mountain which rises to nearly 2,500ft above sea level.
One recent British visitor wrote on TripAdvisor: “Well worth the climb and great views over Denia. We went just before evening and watched the sunset over the hills.”
Another said: “An excellent walk to the top of the Montgo one Saturday afternoon proved to be an exhilarating experience.
