SIMON Thomas is a British TV presenter who quit his role at Sky Sports following the death of his beloved wife, Gemma.
The former Blue Peter presenter and his now nine-year-old son Ethan were left devastated last year and Simon has documented their journey through grief on his social media accounts.
Who is Simon Thomas?
Simon was born in Cromer, Norfolk, on January 26, 1973 – that makes him 45.
Although Simon most recently presented live Premier League football on Sky Sports, he’s also known for presenting Blue Peter from 1999 until 2005.
He co-presented with Stuart Miles, Katy Hill, Konnie Huq, Matt Baker, Liz Barker and Zöe Salmon.
Simon joined Sky Sports in June 2005, presenting the 3-7pm shift on Sky Sports News.
He has also presented Cricket AM on Sky Sports 1, Sky Sports News Cricket World Cup Report, the Mosconi Cup from Las Vegas, Sky Sports World Cup report from Cape Town in 2010 and Sky Sports News coverage of the 2010 Ryder Cup.
He became the lead presenter of Sky Sports’ live Football League coverage at the start of the 2010/2011 Football Season.
Why did Simon Thomas leave Sky Sports?
On April 27, Simon announced that he would be stepping down from his role as a Sky Sports presenter at the end of the football season.
His main reason for taking a break is so he can spend more time with his son Ethan following the loss of his wife Gemma Thomas who passed away in 2017.
In his personal blog he wrote: “I have decided to leave Sky at the end of the season…firstly and most importantly, I’m doing it for Ethan.
“On that first morning after Gemma went, I remember Ethan coming up to me in the lounge and through his tears, he said these words, ‘Daddy, you know every weekend you go away and do the football, and I spend the weekend with Mummy? What do I do now?’ And they have stuck with me ever since.”
Managing director of Sky Sports Barney Francis said: “Simon has suffered an unspeakable loss and we have done everything we can to ease the burden he is carrying. I spoke to Simon this morning and fully support his decision.”
Who was Simon’s wife Gemma?
Simon married Gemma Thomas in 2005.
On November 24, 2017, she died just three days after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia.
Simon described his first birthday since losing his wife as “the unhappiest” of days in a poignant note to his son.
He wrote: “Today is going to be the unhappiest of birthdays for Daddy with Mummy no longer here.
“But, know this my dear boy. You make me so happy and I love you more than all the Lego in the world.”
In January, Simon revealed he is being helped though his grief by the kindness of a complete stranger, who sends him notes of encouragement.
He also revealed in April 2018 that Ethan had finally been able to sleep in his own bedroom again – he’d been sharing with Simon since Gemma died.
A year after his wife’s passing, Simon shared that he was in a new relationship who has been an “incredible support” to both him and his son.
Talking on BBC Radio 5 Live, he said: “Right from the early stages – she had this empathy towards me. She’s Christian as well and that’s important to me as a man of faith.
“She’s been an incredible support for me. She was the only person who would always pick up the phone.”
The day after he revealed the news about her new relationship, Simon announced that he’d be taking some time off social media.
