PEAKY Blinders director Anthony Byrne has teased a drug trafficking turf war with the Mafia in season six.
The BBC drama’s fifth series came to a dramatic end last night, and fans are already speculating what it will all mean for season six.
The fifth season introduced Michael’s new wife Gina Gray, and Anthony has teased her family in America could descend on the show.
He told BBC Sounds’ Obsessed With Peaky Blinders podcast: “Gina, and whoever her family are, will make themselves known, Oswald Mosley and some people around him and his world.”
Fans have been convinced Gina is trying to orchestrate Tommy Shelby’s downfall throughout the fifth season.
In the final episode, she was seen telling her doting husband Michael it was “time they went with their second option” after Tommy (Cillian Murphy) turned down his suggestion of taking over the family business.
Gina is clearly up to something, and her family – which has a connection to drug trafficking over in the US – could spell more trouble for Tommy and his relatives.
However, fans are going to have to wait a long time to see how things play out, despite creator Steven Knight already writing the scripts for series six.
Anthony explained: “I start later this year and then we shoot next year and I have no idea when it would be out.
“Maybe early 2021, something like that?”
Fans were left fearing for Tommy’s life at the end of last night’s episode as he held a gun to his head in a field as he was taunted by his dead ex-wife.
And Anthony admitted he originally had “no idea” what was happening at that point when they were filming.

He continued: “I mean I do now. At the time when we were shooting it. Nobody knew, so I wanted to commit to playing it.
“Cillian didn’t know either. I checked my email [after filming] and episode one of season 6 had just arrived and I went ‘Oh f**k, do you want to know what happens after what we’ve just watched?’
“Then I sat on the couch and started reading it and my editor was sitting beside me just going “Woah!” and “f**k!”
