A COUPLE booked a golden wedding break at their local Thomas Cook branch — minutes before it shut its doors for good.

John Bradbury, 71, and wife Patricia, 68, took £2,300 out of the bank at 4.30pm last Friday to pay for the 11-day all-inclusive Lanzarote break.

A couple have slammed Thomas Cook bosses after they spent thousands on a golden wedding break, just minutes before the travel firm went bust

Former brickie John found out only when he got home that the world’s oldest travel firm was going to the wall.

He said: “We’d got the money out and had the holiday booked by 5pm. We’d been pondering what to do for months but it was a spur of the moment decision.

“When I got home I saw that the firm was going bust. It was on the front page of The Sun.

“But in the shop the girls were normal. No one said anything about problems.

“I don’t think they knew a thing either. But the bosses must have. They’re crooks for letting us buy that holiday.”

The couple, of Mansfield, Notts — who called the shop repeatedly on Saturday to no avail — were hoping to go to Playa Blanca in January.

John said: “We don’t know what to do now or who to call to try to get a refund. I can’t believe how badly it’s all been handled.”

Thomas Cook folded on Monday after 178 years of trading — leaving 160,000 Brits stranded. They are being flown home by the CAA on hired planes over the next two weeks.
