EVERYONE loves their gran – and I don’t think there has ever been a cinematic relative quite as loveable as Nai Nai.

The plot of this Chinese-American comic drama revolves around the OAP whose family discover she has cancer but opt not to tell her.

The Farewell is both funny and moving and features the most loveable nan in cinema

Instead they stage a wedding reception in Changchun, China, so that all of Nai Nai’s relatives can see her one last time without revealing it’s a farewell. Her beloved granddaughter Billi, excellently played by Awkwafina from Crazy Rich Asians, flies over from New York troubled by the deception.

Zhao Shuzhen gives a big-hearted performance as old trouper Nai Nai, playfully telling Billi not to be so glum at the “happy” occasion.

This film isn’t about cancer, it’s about the sacrifices we make for family and how we approach mortality.

In one of the funniest scenes, relatives place food and gifts on the grave of Nai Nai’s deceased husband, which is a common Chinese ritual. When one of her sons lights a cigarette for the deceased man, she objects before a daughter chimes in: “Ma, let the man smoke, he’s already dead.”

The Farewell (PG) 100mins
