RUGBY legend Gareth Thomas recently revealed that he was living with HIV.
The sporting superstar also became the first openly gay professional rugby union player when he “came out” in 2009 and went on to marry husband, Stephen in 2016. Read on to find out everything we know about one of the world’s leading international try-scorers and his husband.
Who is Gareth Thomas?
Welsh ruby legend Gareth Thomas was the most capped Welsh rugby union player until 2011.
He is currently 13th in the world amongst the highest try scorers, and is the second highest Wales try scorer.
He also won four rugby league caps for Wales, scoring three tries.
Thomas played rugby union for Bridgend, Cardiff, the Celtic Warriors, Toulouse, Cardiff Blues, and Wales as a fullback, wing or centre.
In 2010 he moved to rugby league, playing for the Crusaders in the Super League, and for Wales before retiring the following year.
The rugby player revealed he was gay in 2009.
At the time he said: “I don’t want to be known as a gay rugby player. I am a rugby player, first and foremost. I am a man.”
Since opening up to the public about his sexuality, Thomas has been vocal about his hopes for young, gay rugby players to be more open with their sexuality.
In an interview, Thomas commented, “I don’t know if my life is going to be easier because I’m out, but if it helps someone else, if it makes one young lad pick up the phone to ChildLine, then it will have been worth it”.
On September 14 this year, he revealed his positive HIV diagnosis and also went public with his marriage to husband, Stephen.
Thomas has reduced his illness to an undetectable state by taking a daily tablet, meaning he cannot pass HIV on to others.
In the trailer for upcoming BBC documentary, HIV and Me Thomas says: “I’m living with HIV, and that’s okay.”
Who is Gareth Thomas’s husband, Stephen?
Stephen Thomas, who lives with Gareth in Bridgend, is 56 years old and has one 23-year-old daughter, Anna.
