BRITAIN’S top 10 fish and chip takeaways have been revealed – but did your local batter up?
The National Fish and Chip Awards 2019 shows which shops have the best of the British dish.
The awards are organised by Seafish, the public body that supports the £10billion UK seafood industry.
They celebrate “true excellence” in the fish and chip industry, judging hundreds of chippies on a nationwide scale.
Each restaurant was also assessed on sustainable sourcing, menu innovation, marketing, staff training and customer service.
Marcus Coleman, chief executive officer at Seafish, said: “These ten finalists represent the best fish and chips on offer the UK today. They are consistently excelling across all areas and providing their customers with healthy, high quality fish and chips on every visit.
“Each of them is a credit to the industry and should be commended on the commitment they have shown to maintaining its fantastic reputation.
“It’s not possible to get to this stage of our awards without giving 100 per cent, and each one of them has shown enthusiasm in spades.
“We’d encourage anyone who hasn’t paid one of these shops a visit to get down and see for yourself just how good they are. Congratulations to all ten finalists, we wish them all the best of luck.”
Britain’s Fish and Chip Shop of The Year will be crowned on 23 January 2020.
Carron Fish Bar, Stonehaven, Grampian
It is the only shop in Scotland to make the top 10 and it boasts stellar customer reviews.
Stonehaven’s Carron Fish Bar is also the home of the deep fried Mars Bar, which they claim to have invented in the 90s.
Dolphin Takeaway, Duncannon, Country Tyrone
In Northern Ireland the Dolphin Takeaway in Dungannon was picked as top choice.
The shop has also previously won Northern Ireland’s No.1 Fish & Chip Shop 2018 – which is a title they have held for three years.
A deluxe meal that includes cod and peas starts at £9.25.
Fish and Chips @ Weston Grove, Cheshire
A statement on their site today reads: “We have accomplished so much in the last year it has been amazing! We want to thank everyone for supporting us, sending us messages of good luck and most importantly our amazing team”.
This fish and chip shop prides itself in not using plastic straws and cutlery, and have asked customers to reuse their paper bags.
The Weston Grove meal deal comes with Cod or Haddock, chip, plus a side of mushy peas and a drink for just £7.20.
The Cod’s Scallops, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire
The Cod’s offers a wide selection of fish and shellfish, all of which are caught from their very own boats.
They also serve sustainable crab, cockles, and lobster.
A cod and chips only cost £9.50 at this top 10 shop.
Shap Chippy, Penrith, Cumbria
Cumbria’s Shap Chippy offers locally-sourced ingredients, and staff arrive at 6am to start peeling the potatoes for chips.
The shop has firmly cemented itself as the favourite fish and chip takeaway in the North West.
A large cod costs £6.50 and can be served poached or lightly battered.
Golden Carp, Redditch, Worcestershire
The Golden Caarp was once dubbed the “best chippy in the West Midlands” – and has now made its way into the top 10 in the country.
The shop offers lets you choose between having your fish with gluten-free batter or just lightly battered.
Hiks, Swansea, West Glamorgan
This fish and chip shop opened seven years ago and boats of having a loyal customer base.
Their site details how all their fish is cooked to order and is always fresh.
Hiks offers an discount for OAPs, offering fish and chips for £4.65.
[email protected], Fishguard, Pembrokeshire
This shop serves both fish and chips as well as waffles and ice cream.
A small cod and chips cost £5.
Rockfish, Brixham, Devon
Rockfish has multiple locations in Devon and Dorest that are all located by the sea and waterside, giving them the chance to serve fresh local seafood.
A classic cod costs about £6.50, and adding chips will be an extra £1.25.
If you’re craving the traditional dish on “Fish Friday”, you can have some of the local catch for £3.
