THE Handmaid’s Tale’s Max Minghella has teased a “very complicated” reunion between Nick Blaine and June Osborne in series four.
The character disappeared half way through series three after being sent to the war front in Chicago, leaving June in Boston fighting for her survival.
Soon after his departure, June – played by Elizabeth Moss – found out Nick had played a violent role in Gilead’s crusade to power, leaving her questioning whether she knew him at all.
While fans were disappointed Nick didn’t return in the series three finale, Max told HarpersBazaar.com a reunion between the lovers could be on the cards in season four.
He said: “I think Nick’s very in love with her, so I’m sure he’s really hoping it works out.
“But she was also married to a wonderful person [Luke] who loves her very much and has a child with that person, so it’s very complicated.”
Nick and June embarked on a secret romance in series one, with June giving birth to their daughter Holly in season two.
Despite being married to Luke – who managed to escape Gilead for Canada – the love story between Nick and June has had viewers hooked.
Max added: “There’s a lot of burying under the carpet between Nick and June, because they need some kind of relief from this hellscape, and you don’t want to have to drag up the past.
“It’s like people who are in long-distance relationships where they only see each other for brief periods of time. They don’t want to start a fight, because they only have three days together.”

However Max admits he has no idea what’s in store for his character in the next series, but is “excited” by what the show’s creator Bruce Miller has in store for the next series.
He added of Nick: “I find Nick to have so many shades of gray to him.
“He’s often a mystery to me, and at the same time, I find him very close to home.
“His are very comfortable shoes to wear.”
