Konstantin’s heartbroken family including, his estranged wife and daughter, then held

a memorial  service, followed by cremation and interment in a local cemetery.

But four months later the 62-year-old Mikhailovna heard a knock on the door, and was stunned when she peered through the peephole and saw her son standing outside, Komsomolskaya Pravda reports.

She said she almost collapsed with shock when she saw the “dead man” standing outside.

Mikhailovna had reported her Konstantin, 43, missing in March after not seeing him or knowing where he was.

A month later she got a call from police saying that they believed they might have found his body, and she was called to the morgue, where she positively identified him.

It was the worst day of her life, said Antonina, from Kronstadt, a town located on Kotlin Island just west of St Petersburg.

For his part Konstantin, who used to be in the military and works at huge naval base on the island, said life got too much for him, and he needed to take some time out to discover himself.

“I was thinking about the meaning of life, and what I want to do with myself,” he told police.

Baffled cops are at a loss as to what to do because he has now been officially declared dead.

They said Konstantin told them he had just gone off to take some time out and “think about the meaning of life”.

A police spokesman said: “In the morgue of the Frunze district of St Petersburg, the mother, Antonina Mikhailovna identified her son Konstantin as being a dead person who was kept there.”

Mikhailovna apologised for misidentifying the body that she was shown and told police that she was very upset at the time

“He looked very familiar, and so I confirmed to police that he was my son,” she said.
