THE British Army must become environmentally friendly if it wants to win future wars, its chief declared yesterday.
General Sir Mark Carleton- Smith warned that military vehicles would be stranded by a lack of fuel pumps if they do not become electric.

And he predicted that youngsters will be put off joining the Army if it is not green.
Speaking at the Defence And Security Equipment International arms fair in London, the Chief of the General Staff said: “Climate change and sustainability may have a profound impact on the way we are going to have to plan to operate.
“The challenge is to lead the world in the development of military equipment that is not only battle winning but also environmentally sustainable.”
He also told how the “next generation of future recruits increasingly make career decision based on an employer’s environmental credentials”.
And he spoke of the need to use hybrid engines to power gas-guzzling diesel battle tanks.

“Imagine the edge the Army would have if it didn’t have to rely on fossil fuels.”
