The Coronation Street favourite begs Dr Gaddas for a diazepam prescription while trying to hide his withdrawal symptoms.

But the GP isn’t fooled and tells Ali he needs to get some help for his addiction. Ali insists that she’s got it wrong and marches out.

Later, he’ll try and fail to pocket some of Carla Connor’s anti-anxiety drugs so he heads home, sweating and shaking.

When his brother – sort-of – Ryan Connor arrives home, he’s horrified to find Ali on the floor convulsing and shaking.

Terrified at seeing Ali having a seizure, Ryan calls an ambulance, but when Ali regains consciousness, he panics.

When the paramedics arrive, Ali sends them away terrified that they’ll discover his drug addiction.

Ali then cancels his date with Maria and Ali admits to a shocked Ryan that he has become addicted to diazepam.

The young doctor begs Ryan to help him. He tells him that he was unable to cope with Cormac’s death and the car crash with gangster Ronan and turned to drugs.

Ryan heads out and returns with Robert Preston who assures Ali that he’s there to help.

Ali agrees to go cold turkey while Ryan and Robert promise him he’ll get through it. Are they right?

Ali has had an issue with prescription pills in the past when he stole them from the medical centre last year after killing gangster Ronan to protect his
family.

The soap has been hinting at a big story line for Ali in the coming weeks and it looks like the incident with Hope might set it off.

Meanwhile actor James recently got engaged to his girlfriend Sophie Coates after proposing in the middle of Lake Windermere.

Sharing a picture of the happy moment on Instagram, he wrote: "So at the weekend I asked my best friend to be my wife on a boat in the middle of
the lake and she said yes.

“It’s made me one very happy man #lakedistrict #engaged #happy.”

Sophie posted a different picture with the ring on her finger, telling fans: “I said yes! Not really, I said ‘are you joking’ about 17 times and then I said
yes.”

James’ co-star Jack P Shepherd, who plays David Platt, was among the colleagues piling in with well-wishes, writing: "Congrats burrows! X.”
