Who is former Tory MP Phillip Lee?

Lee was born and raised in Buckinghamshire.

He studied Human Biology and Biological Anthropology at King’s College London and Keble College, Oxford.

He also studied medicine at Imperial College London and is a qualified doctor.

As a doctor he has worked in hospitals across London before becoming a GP.

What are his political affiliations?

Lee joined the Conservatives in Beaconsfield in 1992, running successfully for the local council in 2001.

He has been the MP for Bracknell since winning the seat as a Conservative at the 2010 General Election.

His primary political interests include health, energy, foreign affairs and science and technology.

He served as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State responsible for Youth Justice, Victims, Female Offenders & Offender Health at the Ministry of Justice.

The politician was opposed to Brexit prior to the 2016 referendum and in July 2018 the outspoken MP for Bracknell resigned as a justice minister to back a second referendum.

Up until September 3, 2019, he was a member of the Conservative Party until he defected to the Liberal Democrats.

What did he do during Boris’ Parliament address?

Boris Johnson lost his Commons majority on Tuesday, September 3, after former Tory MP Lee crossed the floor to join the Liberal Democrats.

Lee defected to the Liberal Democrats right in front of the PM as he gave a speech at the despatch box – and went to sit with them in the Commons.

As new Liberal Democrat Jane Dodds was sworn in, Mr Lee was by her side, right under Boris’ nose.

He made the move over disagreements with the Conservative Party’s handling of Brexit.

The Conservative government now has no working majority in the House of Commons.

After 27 years as a Tory he said “the party I joined in 1992 is not the Party I am leaving today”.

In a statement he took a blast at Boris, saying: “This Conservative Government is aggressively pursuing a damaging Brexit in unprincipled ways.

“It is putting lives and livelihoods at risk unnecessarily and is endangering the integrity of the UK.

“It is using political manipulation, bullying and lies.

“And it is doing these things in a deliberate and considered way. It has gone so far beyond reckless as to cease to be conservative.”

In a statement issued on the Liberal Democrats website, Lee wrote: “After a great deal of thought, I have reached the conclusion that it is not possible to serve my constituents’ and country’s best interests as a Conservative Member of Parliament.

“I believe the Liberal Democrats are best placed to build the unifying and inspiring political force needed to heal our divisions, unleash our talents, equip us to take the opportunities and overcome the challenges that we face as a society – and leave our country and our world in a better place for the next generations.”
