The cursed love lives of Girls Aloud – from stalker ex-boyfriends and love rats spouses to ‘seven-times-a-night’ sex secrets spilled

NADINE Coyle’s relationship with American footie ace Jason Bell seemed like one of the strongest romances in showbiz – but the pair have just announced their split after 11 years together.

The Northern Irish singer now joins the ranks of her single band mates, who have had more than their fair share of broken hearts over the years.

Despite their phenomenal chart-topping success and solo career achievements, currently Kimberley Walsh is the only member of Girls Aloud to find lasting love – she’s been with Justin Scott since 2003, and they tied the knot in 2016.

Things are very different for former X Factor star Cheryl, who has two failed marriages under her belt at the age of 36 and is now single, while Nicola Roberts suffered stalker hell at the hands of an ex and Sarah Harding went through the humiliation of having her sex secrets made public.

It seems being beautiful and talented doesn’t mean you’ll escape the ups and downs of love, as the singers’ tribulations prove.

Here, with the help of celeb dating consultant Nichi Hodgson, we examine the band’s tumultuous love lives….

Rehab and a tattoo of Nadine’s naked body

Before she met Jason, Nadine had a year-long romance with Desperate Housewives star Jesse Metcalfe.

It was 2007 and there was even speculation he would pop the question – but things didn’t end well.

Jesse spent time in rehab for alcohol problems and there were cheating allegations, with Nadine eventually calling time on the romance.

It’s something she later admitted handling badly, telling Observer Music Monthly: “I was only 21 – [I] didn’t have any experience, didn’t know how to be there and support someone through an addiction on the other side of the world.

“We were just about to go on tour. I was selfish, I have to say. I really hurt Jesse over that whole situation. And I’ve regretted it ever since.”

No need to fret too much though Nadine, as Jesse got his own back by having a naked figure of her tattooed on his arm.

“It was a immature and I’d get it removed if I could. But it’s also my favourite tattoo,” he later said.

A year after her split from Jesse, Nadine met Jason.

They got engaged in 2010 but broke up the following year, with the star announcing the news on Twitter.

She said they’d realised there were better as “great friends”.

Rumours began swirling that the pair were back together in 2013, and then came the new the star was expecting her first baby.

She didn’t immediately confirm who the daddy was, but later explained she’d reunited with Jason and they were getting married.

He popped the question not long before their daughter Anaíya Bell was born in April 2014.

Drug addict ex and sex seven times a day

The most famous member of Girls Aloud thanks to her stint as a judge on The X Factor and high-profile relationships with Ashley Cole and Liam Payne, the star formerly known as Cheryl Tweedy is definitely not immune to heartbreak.

One of Cheryl’s lesser-known early boyfriends was plumber Steve Thornton, then 21, who she dated for five months back in 2000 when she was 17.

In 2008, he said that Cheryl seduced him by putting a blindfold on him and leading him upstairs, telling him “I’m going to give you the ride of your life”.
Mortifyingly for Cheryl, he also revealed they had sex seven times in one day – a claim Cheryl denies.

The Fight For This Love singer also dated salesman Jason Mack before becoming a household name, who admitted he put the star “through hell” by blowing £200 a day on cocaine.

Speaking earlier this year to Fault Magazine, Cheryl admitted: “I’ve made mistakes in relationships.

“I’ve been with men who were controlling, who made me unhappy, but I allowed it to happen.”

Forced to get an STI test after cheating scandal

Cheryl is currently single after splitting from One Direction heartthrob Liam, who’s ten years younger than her and dad to her two-year-old son Bear.

The worlds “sexiest women” (a crown bestowed on her twice by FHM) seems bruised by the latest split, recently saying: “I know what I want in life, but in the romantic area, I am not as evolved. That area has stopped. It’s not happening anymore. It’s the end. It’s the end.

“I’ve got the man (Bear) in my life now.”

It’s not difficult to see why she might be wary.

In 2008, the singer was left with more “sadness, physical pain, sickness and fury” than she’d ever experienced when she discovered her first husband, football ace Ashley Cole, had cheated on her with a hairdresser.

She stuck with her husband, but when he became embroiled in a sexting scandal and then four more women accused him of being unfaithful they split.

In her deeply honest memoir, My Story, Cheryl revealed she threw up when she learnt the details of Ashley’s romps, and decided to get an STI test after his infidelity.

She went on to marry Jean-Bernard Fernandez Versini after a three-month whirlwind romance in 2014 – but in less than a year Cheryl had split from him and they divorced in 2016.

Their break-up was messy, with lots of he-said-she-said stories flying around, and accusations of cheating.

Nichi explains both these relationships are typical of the problems celebs can face when trying to find love, not least as it can be hard to tell what someone’s true motives are.

“Celebrities often attract people that are only interested in them for their celebrity, and other problems they can experience include having ridiculous expectations of you to be ‘on’ as the star all the time,” she said.

“If the partner has a narcissistic temperament, but might also not be able to handle being the lesser known or less ‘important’ one of the two.”

‘He f****d off to Ibiza’

Sarah Harding, 37, has kept any recent romances out of the spotlight, but she has had more than her fair share of high-profile heartache over the years.

She appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2017 and ended up dumping her boyfriend, plumber Aaron Lacey, for her co-star Chad Johnson, a reality TV star famous for being on The Bachelor.

Things didn’t work out though – she later branded the US star a “little b***h” and admitted being furious when he removed photos of her from his Instagram while they were together, as people presumed they’d split.

According to Nichi, Sarah’s experiences are classic among stars who find themselves at the centre of gossip about their love lives.

“A lack of privacy can actually create suspicion in a partner that they are being ignored or cheated on – and the rumour mill is highly destructive when you are trying to build trust in difficult daily circumstances,” she says.

While on the reality show the former party girl opened up about her previous heartache over her failed engagement.

She had been due to wed DJ Tom Crane after getting engaged in 2011 after four years together – but their relationship crumbled.

Sarah said: “A lot of my issues were down to being in a toxic relationship.

“For me it stems completely from being hurt, six months before I was due to get married.

“It all just tumbled around me and I had to front everything and he f**ked off to Ibiza and I had nothing.

“And I felt like I had lost my family and my friends that we had all built for five years.”

Rehab rebound and assault claims

After the split, Sarah, now 37, turned to booze and ended up in rehab in 2011. She said at the time: “I was drinking to deal with my emotions after the split.

“I just went mental. It took a couple of weeks to sink in and I went off the rails really badly.”

She met Theo Van Dries in rehab and the pair dated for three months.

The pair flew to Austria for Christmas but their short-lived romance ended after they allegedly had a violent fight in their hotel room.

In the police report, Sarah claimed he “dragged her around their room by her hair, bit her and smashed her head against the floor repeatedly”.

Before that, Sarah had a fling with reality TV star Calum Best, son of football legend George Best.

Famed womaniser Calum once boasted they once “stayed in bed for three days”.

Speaking about why they split, Sarah explained: “Calum and I were very on and off for two years. I think the reason why Calum and I didn’t have a bit more long-term [relationship], like he has with most girls, was because I didn’t take any s**t.

“I called him Mr. Reliable because he would always be late… He was just a nightmare.”

Threatened by stalker ex with ‘knife’ emojis

She may be happily single now, but Nicola Roberts, 33, was left terrified when she was bombarded with sinister messages threatening to stab and burn her from 35 fake Twitter accounts

The culprit turned out to be her ex Carl Davies, who sent 3,000 messages in a campaign lasting from 2012 until his arrest in 2017.

The pair dated for 18 months at the height of her Girls Aloud fame, but split in 2008 after a series of rows.

Davies admitted one count of stalking and another count of persistent use of public communication network to cause annoyance or inconvenience and was handed a 15-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

He was also given a lifetime restraining order, and banned from looking at Nicola’s Instagram account.

The singer – who had a five-year relationship with her childhood sweetheart Carl Egerton from the age of 16 – went on to date businessman Charlie Fennell for six years and seemed blissfully happy.

At the time Nicola said: “I’m the happiest I’ve ever been and completely in love.”

They moved in together in 2010 and had two dogs, but their seemingly idyllic life together didn’t last. In 2014 they “grew apart” and announced their romance was over.

And one happy ending…

Only Kimberley Walsh seems to be immune from the Girls Loud love curse.

She’s been with her bloke Justin Scott, formerly of boy band Triple 8, since 2003, with the couple marrying in 2016 and having two kids together.

As a couple they’re pretty low-key, preferring to keep their romance out of the public eye… which is perhaps why they’ve managed to stay together.
