EASTENDERS bosses have tackled some tough topics over the past few years – with knife crime, domestic abuse and rape at the heart of the soap.
Now they will shine a light on alcoholism as Queen Vic landlady Linda Carter, played by KELLIE BRIGHT, turns to the bottle to cope with the mounting pressure on her family.
After her latest cancer scare, Mick’s false imprisonment and Ollie’s suspected autism, Linda, below, sees no way out.
She’s not the only landlady at the Queen Vic to have had a problem with drink.
In 1985 Angie Watts, played by ANITA DOBSON, turned to booze during her marriage to Dirty Den. But this time producers have been working with alcoholism charity Drinkaware to help get the storyline right.
EastEnders boss Jon Sen said: “Linda’s descent into alcoholism will be instantly recognisable to many.

“It’s a journey that begins with a single drink to cope with the everyday ups and downs, but quickly escalates to a point which wreaks devastation on their life and the lives of those around them.
“In telling Linda’s story, we hope that anyone in Linda’s situation, or those around them, notice the signs of alcoholism and seek the help needed.”
This is what soaps do best.
