AN advert by animal rights group PETA has been banned for claiming “wool is just as cruel as fur”.
Watchdogs ruled the slogan was “misleading” after it appeared on the side of buses in February.

The advert showed a picture of a woman’s face covered by a woollen jumper with the slogan: “Don’t let them pull the wool over your eyes. Wool is just as cruel as fur. GO WOOL-FREE THIS WINTER PETA”.
Ten people complained to the Advertising Standards Authority, pointing out that sheep had to be shorn for health reasons.
However, PETA denied it was misleading and gave examples of sheep being abused across the world for their whool.
An ASA spokesman said: “Sheep were not killed for their wool as animals were in the fur industry.

“It was presented as a factual claim and a direct comparison between the two industries. On that basis the claim was misleading.”
“We therefore concluded on that basis that the claim was misleading and in breach of the Code.
“The ad must not appear in its current form. We told PETA not to use the claim ‘wool is just as cruel as fur’ in future.”
